I have participated in therapy at many points in my life and can say without any reservation that my sessions with Dr. Pereira were the most helpful. In the past, therapy was mostly venting, and after sessions I would go home and cry because I did not have any skills to then deal with what I was going through. Dr. Pereira’s approach is dramatically different. With the use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and focus on development of actual skills, I learnt skills to manage when I am having difficulty, and I have far less difficulties. I made more progress in therapy with Dr. Pereira over the past 10 weeks than I did in years of therapy in the past. Not only is Dr. Pereira easy to talk to and empathic, she has the knowledge and educational background that I needed to address my difficulties. When I first met with Dr. Pereira I was experiencing physical health issues and was at a breaking point, which was due to significant levels of stress. I felt relaxed during our first session, and felt confident that there was confidentiality, which helped me to be open. Dr. Pereira’s probing and questions helped me to understand the roots of my difficulties, and I was able to see progress occurring. The out-of-session exercises helped me significantly. Dr. Pereira has helped me immensely through our teletherapy work. Before working with her, I had experienced a lot of loss and my social anxiety was dominating my life. I was constantly having severe anxiety about people’s perceptions of me, to the point where it was difficult for me to go outside. Now, though my social anxiety is still there and I’m constantly working on it, I’m able to go to class, the library, social events, and be around new people without being paralyzed with anxiety like I was a year ago. I attribute this change to her kindness and compassion, as well as the large amount of exposure work we did over the past year. These exposures were key to the development of my coping skills and helping myself to realize my life isn’t actually the way my social anxiety had distorted it in my head. Dr. Pereira’s calmness and time speaking with her helped me to realize that there was a light at the end of the tunnel…I didn’t feel as helpless and hopeless. By giving me homework, Dr. Pereira made me become more conscious of my thoughts throughout the week, not only in the sessions. Rating my mood especially helped me to become more aware and perceptive of my thoughts between sessions, which helped me to realize that I was doing the work and it wouldn’t get fixed just in the sessions…between the sessions the work was mine. Journaling, writing down my thoughts, and then restructuring them was very helpful.
Talking to Dr. Pereira was reassuring. It helped me to know that other people have gone through this before and that you can come through. I thought it was going to be a lifestyle for me and I would have to forever cope. I never thought it would end. I thought I would be an anxious, depressed person for the rest of my life and I didn’t realize that it could pass. Although it still comes in waves, it passes. Years later, I still refer to and use a lot of the techniques and counter-thoughts we worked on in therapy and they help. Coping with Life has become easier since meeting Dr. Pereira. I am 99% better now. I can’t remember the last time I had a panic or anxiety attack. I am off medications that I used to need. My moods are fine and I don’t have many swings. If I have a bad day, I know it is just a bad day, not a bad life. Even though my therapy has ended, it continues to help me.

At first I had my reservations about teletherapy in terms of its effectiveness to assist with my ability to express myself without in-person interaction but after my sessions began I could appreciate how intimate it still was without my having to sit face to face. I believe that the quality of my sessions was dependent on my ability to find a quiet and intimate spot in my home which I was able to do 95% of the time. Dr. Pereira was very easy to talk to. Originally, I began therapy to learn new skills to cope. I was overall struggling with taking care of myself, getting through the day-to-day and knew I needed a new way to go about life. Therapy was tailored very well for my needs at the time, and the step-by-step progression of learning how to do exposures and work through my thoughts and feelings went in a very seamless order so that I was able to build on the skills that I already acquired, and then implement those skills as I was working on each set of issues. As a result of therapy, my general outlook of the world has shifted, my perceptions of other people, and my perceptions about how others perceive me – these areas especially improved a lot. I really feel like my life here has changed drastically, as a student at RUSVM, and with living in St. Kitts, away from my family support system. I found a way to create a support system within myself, and I already notice a huge change in just my first week of 7th by using the skills I learned in therapy. Although it was difficult to speak about, even from the very first therapy session, I felt that Dr. Pereira was sympathetic and had a good understanding of what I experienced. I felt the skills that Dr. Pereira was teaching me were immediately helpful. Although I did cry a lot at first as I worked through past difficulties, I knew that this was a necessary part of the process. As we moved forward with the sessions, writing down my experiences and thoughts were extremely helpful: this was the first time that I actually wrote down the thoughts that were cluttering my head. These exercises stopped the ongoing chatter in my head, and made a huge impact on my ability to deal with difficult feelings. The sessions where we began addressing my stuck points were particularly helpful, as I then applied these skills through out-of-session assignments. The skills used stopped me from feeling guilty about things that I now understand were not in my control as a child. I was finally able to let go of the guilt and shame I felt.
Therapy helped me to see for the first time that what I experienced as a child was not normal, and that those in my life had an immense amount of control over my life (in the past and even in adulthood.) In learning these skills, I was also able to see how I was accepting those same behaviors from people in my life currently. I can now recognize red flags and when others are attempting to manipulate me. I am no longer afraid to stand up for myself and no longer tolerate manipulative behavior.
I highly recommend Dr. Pereira without any hesitation. She is definitely the best therapist I have seen. Her training and knowledge was very apparent, and her skills, empathy and compassion created a safe place for me to work through what was a lifetime of difficulties.

Dr. Pereira entered my life when I needed her the most! Juggling school, life and past traumas were affecting my well being and I didn’t know what to do. When I first met Dr. Pereira a few years back, I was in a really bad place. I was depressed, had low self-esteem and was having frequent anxiety and panic attacks, which had a really bad impact on my overall health. Doing simple day-to-day tasks was overwhelming and difficult. I couldn’t sleep for days, I got stomach ulcers, I would cry for hours, felt like I was suffocating, and I started to isolate myself from people. I didn’t have any proper perspective on life and I didn’t know what to do to fix this. I couldn’t function at all. This was my breaking point and when I decided to seek professional help once again.
At first I was kind of hesitant because 1) I didn’t want to feel judged and 2) I didn’t want to go on medication right away, because from my past experience seeking professional help I felt I was being drugged up too much, I couldn’t remember simple things and most days I felt numb or in a daze.
Dr. Pereira was kind and patient with me. In these sessions, she gave me some super helpful techniques to help me cope and navigate through life. With her help, I was able to recognize what triggered my anxiety and that it all mostly stemmed from PTSD from past experiences, and Bipolar II difficulties. If it were not for Dr. Pereira, I would not have gotten the correct treatment I needed.
Dr. Pereira helped me to learn how to control my emotions. She taught me how to control my panic/anxiety attacks by using different techniques and exercises. She offers great interventions and advice that made me feel comfortable and grounded. Therapy with her helped me a lot to understand what I was going through. A lot of persons didn’t understand what I was going through, and it felt impossible to explain how I felt without people judging me and calling me crazy, because they couldn’t relate. In today’s society a lot of people don’t seek help or talk about their negative mental disposition because they are afraid of being judged and called crazy, or other derogatory terms. I was not crazy. I was someone who was sick and afraid to get help, which I am glad I eventually did.
After every session with Dr. Pereira, I walked out of her office with confidence, peace of mind and clarity. It was easy to talk to Dr. Pereira about anything without feeling judged or guilty. She is full of compassion and empathy, and has a passion for what she does. She is very observant and pays attention to every small detail. I am so grateful to Dr. Pereira for where I’m at today.

Initially I was in a really dark place. I was holding this in. I didn’t know how to let this out and became extremely overwhelmed. At this point, I realized it was best to seek out assistance from somebody who could assist me. When I did my research on psychologists in St. Kitts and came upon Dr. Pereira’s website, I felt inspired to reach out.
Since it was my first experience with therapy and I didn’t know what to expect, I was initially hesitant but hoping for the best. After my first session, I came out not certain that it would help, but as we moved into the therapy, I felt I was in a safe place to talk and I was actually learning skills to cope. I always say that Dr. Pereira had something over me…I knew I was in a safe place and actually getting the help that I needed.
Because the type of therapy is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, I learned a lot of skills that I helped me mentally, in terms of changing my thoughts and not letting my emotions control my behavior. While I may feel difficult emotions, I no longer allow them to control me and I have seen a lot of change. When I feel down, I am able to tell myself that this is okay, and I understand what I am experiencing. I am also better able to get tasks done, even when I am not in the mood. From therapy, I have become more conscious about myself, which has helped me to develop more healthy habits, and I make myself a priority now.
I know that it takes a lot of strength to open up to somebody, especially if all your life you have kept things a secret. It is important to find the right person to open up to but the best thing to do is to try to find somebody who is confidential, and try to find that strength within yourself because we can’t always do it alone. Therapy with the right therapist, can be extremely effective.
