The length of therapy varies by client. While some clients meet for only 2-3 sessions, some clients will meet for a year or longer. During your first session, Dr. Pereira will provide you with an estimate of sessions she believes will be most helpful. Depending on progress made towards your goals, therapy may end earlier than expected, or may be extended, especially if new difficulties emerge during sessions. This decision will be made jointly between you and Dr. Pereira.
Dr. Pereira uses evidence and skills-based therapies to allow for the quickest resolution of difficulties. Most often, Dr. Pereira will ask that you complete assignments outside of sessions to ensure that you are applying skills learned in sessions in your life, where it matters most. Doing this helps to ensure that you accomplish your goals as quickly as possible.
The first session with Dr. Pereira is usually 75 minutes long. After that, sessions are typically 60 minutes long. In the case of crisis sessions, Dr. Pereira may schedule 2-hour sessions.
Evidence-based therapies (EBT) are psychological approaches and techniques that have been scientifically proven to work. The use of EBT ensures that clients only pay for and participate in therapies that are proven to be effective, which results in clients spending less time and money receiving treatment than those participating in therapies that have not been proven to be effective. Dr. Pereira uses only evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in the treatment of client difficulties.
Most clients are seen one time per week. Clients having particular difficulty may be seen twice per week; however, this generally only occurs for a short period of time. As therapy is nearing completion, sessions may be reduced to every second week, or monthly. This is generally done to ensure that treatment gains are maintained independently. In the case of financial difficulties or other constraints, sessions may be scheduled for every other week; however, this is generally not optimal, especially at the beginning of therapy.
The goal of the first session is to better understand you and your situation, your difficulties or problem, your background and strengths. This is accomplished through discussion and oftentimes some testing. At the end of this session, Dr. Pereira will provide you with initial impressions and information about whether therapy with her is likely to be helpful. Dr. Pereira will also make recommendations about the length of therapy, and will work with you to identify goals for treatment. An important aspect of the first session is to help you to feel safe and comfortable sharing your concerns.
Fees for psychological services may be covered by your health insurance. St. Kitts Counseling Services is licensed in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. As such, you may directly submit your service receipts for reimbursement from your insurance company. The amount that insurance company pays varies by insurance companies. While some insurance companies will reimburse for 100% the cost of individual sessions, others may only reimburse for XCD30-70. It is recommended that you contact your health insurance company prior to your first session to ask how much they pay towards psychological services. Dr. Pereira will provide you with any documentation needed to request payment from your insurance company.
Therapy sessions are scheduled in advance, and are a time reserved exclusively for you. When a session is cancelled without adequate notice, Dr. Pereira is unable to fill this time slot by offering it to another client. As such, a late fee will be billed for all sessions that are not cancelled with minimally 48-hours of notice.
Dr. Pereira is a Clinical Psychologist, not a psychiatrist. As such, she does not prescribe medication. Although she does not prescribe medication, she can make recommendations for physicians or psychiatrists in St. Kitts who can prescribe psychiatric medication, and is happy to work collaboratively with any medication providers.
Dr. Pereira provides individual, couples and family therapy. In the course of any of these treatments, it may be helpful to invite additional family members, partners, or other loved ones into a limited number of sessions. Reasons for this may include providing loved ones with information related to a client’s difficulties, or problem-solving for specific client difficulties. The decision to bring another person into a therapy session is made only after discussing the reasons with Dr. Pereira, and making sure that the topics planned for discussion are clear.
Sometimes people call to schedule an appointment for a friend or family member who is having difficulty. Although Dr. Pereira will listen to your concerns, you will not be able to schedule an appointment for anybody who is 18 years or older. The person themself must call to schedule an appointment. Due to confidentiality concerns, no information related to a client’s care, including whether or not they have been seen by Dr. Pereira, will be shared unless a client signs an authorization to release information form.
If you are concerned that somebody you care about is having difficulty but is not willing to meet for therapy, Dr. Pereira could meet with you for one consultation session to discuss more effective strategies to deal with your loved one. You may also want to consider whether individual therapy for yourself may be helpful, especially if your life is being impacted by your loved one’s difficulties.
